Creation and General Information

The Musicman Sterling is a model of bass guitar designed by Musicman and named by Sterling Ball (son of founder Ernie Ball). The Sterling was developed as an alternative to the Musicman String Ray. It is a lighter, smaller version of the Sting Ray and has 22 frets instead of 21. In 1993, Musician Magazine named it the “Most Innovative Design of the Year.” This bass was specifically developed for people who wanted more variety than the String Ray offered, but the same simplicity and quality that Musicman products have been known to possess.

Look and Feel

The Musicman Sterling 5 bass has a weight of a little less than 10 pounds, which is much more lightweight than models with similar features. The hardwoods (including ash wood) are finished in high-gloss polyester, which helps to preserve the wood and enhance the sound. The pickguard color can be black or white. The Musicman Sterling 5 bass has four strings and the chrome plated, hardened steel bridge plate that also helps to create the unique sounds that Musicman is known for in its basses.

The Musicman Sterling 5 also has a variety of features that really appeal to people who have bought this particular model. One of the reasons that many bass players enjoy it is because it has a variety of options that you can choose from while playing it. There are various EQ’s, volumes, and even some tuning machines that can help you to develop the bass sound that you want out of your instrument.

“It stays in tune and very rarely goes out, only seldom at outdoor gigs. The build quality is fantastic; MADE IN AMERICA! It is very easy to play and I’ve never had to set it up. Out of the box (and the included hard-shell case) it was asking to be played.” – Alex M.

“This is my go-to bass. I can play this bass at any gig that I do and feel extremely comfortable all night long playing any genre of music. The sound is amazing regardless of the amp that I am using and this dude plays like butter – every time. Inside, outside, rock, funk, alternative or jazz -doesn’t matter – when I need a bass that I can play, I take my Sterling.” – Brian L.

“EB Musicman is one of the best manufacturers for attention to detail. This is the second bass for me from them and both are immaculate in workmanship. Playability is extremely comfortable on this model with a clear fundamental tone. The 4th pickup position on this model is my favorite. Clearly a no brainer for a quality made and playing instrument.” – Willy R.
